Welcome to the Department of Radiation Oncology

Our team of physicians, medical physicists, nurses, radiation therapists and dosimetrists are devoted to treating a range of benign and malignant conditions.

Our clinic occupies 40,000 square feet on the lower level of the Pomerantz Family Pavilion, located just below the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, Iowa's only National Cancer Institute designated cancer center. We provide regional care through a UI Health Care clinic in Bettendorf and staff clinics in Ottumwa, Clinton, and West Burlington.

Each day our clinic treats over 100 patients on our main campus with a suite of devices and techniques tailored to the needs of each patient. We offer the highest standards of care using leading edge technologies and imaging modalities and train the next generation of clinicians with vibrant physician, medical physics and radiation therapy training programs.

Leading Research

The laboratory of James Byrne, MD, PhD, investigates how gas-entrapping materials (GeMs) such as foam can deliver different types of gas to tumors to aid cancer therapy or prevent damage during treatment. For example by delivering oxygen directly to the tumor using GeMs, the tumor is made more responsive to radiation and other therapies. Similarly, low doses of carbon monoxide help reduce inflammation aiding recovery.

Leading Innovation

For over forty years, our department has employed leading-edge imaging modalities to better see the malignancies we treat. As one of the first departments to use stand-alone CT imaging, we’ve developed into the preeminent center for MR-Linac visualization research and treatment. Our team has developed breath-hold techniques for lung and abdominal tumors, employs Comprehensive Motion Management to track the tumor in real-time, and restrict motion with abdominal compression.
