Radiation Oncology department at opening of FRRB lab

The University of Iowa Department of Radiation Oncology celebrated the grand opening of its newly renovated Free Radical and Radiation Biology (FRRB) research laboratories on October 30, 2026. The event marked an investment in the people, facilities, and scientific discovery that support the program’s research mission.

Located in the Medical Laboratories Building, the renovated space builds on a long history of discovery at Iowa. For decades, FRRB investigators have advanced understanding of oxidative stress, free radical biology, cancer, and the biological effects of ionizing radiation.

The program brings together faculty, staff, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows dedicated to understanding fundamental biological processes and translating their findings into better treatments for patients. The updated laboratories provide modern infrastructure to support this work and the next generation of researchers.

The celebration also offered an opportunity to recognize the many people who made the renovation possible, including University of Iowa and Carver College of Medicine leadership, facilities and construction teams, departmental administrators, and the faculty and staff whose patience and commitment supported the project.

As the program begins this next chapter, its longstanding spirit of curiosity, creativity, and collaboration remains central to its mission. The renovated laboratories represent an investment in that legacy—and in the discoveries still to come.
